George S. Tornatore, 87, of Tolland, loving husband of over 64 years (he passed a day before their 65th wedding anniversary) to Evelyn (Johnson) Tornatore, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at his home with his family at his side. Born in Corona, New York, the son of the late Girolamo and Giuseppina (Genovese) Tornatore, he grew up and lived in Corona before moving to Tolland 56 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1989, George was a welder and sheet metal worker for over 30 years with Union Local # 40 in East Hartford. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the United Congregational Church of Tolland. He was a charter member, with perfect attendance for over 40 years, of the Tolland Lions Club. George was selected as Lion of the Year in 1975. He served for many years on the Tolland Republican Town Committee, and the Tolland Waste Water Committee. He also helped at the voting polls during election. George was a Justice of the Peace for many years. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, making homemade wine, and eating Maine lobsters. He was an avid UConn men's and women's basketball fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beloved children, Yolanda Banning and her husband Richard of AR, Georgia Hersey and her husband John of Kennebunk, ME, Patricia Fitzgerald and her husband John of Franklin, MA, and Priscilla Mckay and her husband Stephen of Tolland; five grandchildren, Athea Langdon, Christie Baker, Heath Banning, and John and Ashley Fitzgerald; two great grandsons, Bradley Langdon and Ethan Banning; a brother, Salvatore Tornatore of Bayville, NY and several nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care that they gave to George. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Friday, April 3, 2015 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 4th, at 11 a.m. in East Cemetery, Skungamaug Road, Tolland with military honors. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Tolland Lions Club, P. O. Box 2020, Tolland, CT 06084.
