Gladys G. (Jena) Itzkowitz, 94, of South Windsor, CT, beloved wife of the late Seymour Itzkowitz, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital, with her loving and devoted daughter, and surrounded by a close circle of friends. Gladys was born on October 5, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Julius and Sadie (Malefsky) Jena. She grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from James Madison High School with the Class of 1939. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brooklyn College in 1945 and a Master of Science Degree from Ferkauf Graduate School, Yeshiva University, in 1974. She was married to the love of her life, Seymour Itzkowitz on June 2, 1957 and together they lived in Brooklyn and Queens, NY for over 35 years. In 2006 Gladys moved to South Windsor, CT, where she made her home with her daughter Judy. Gladys taught English as a second language in the public schools, reading in the Catholic Schools and was a Special Education Teacher. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the Charles Gold Company, manufacturer of fine jewelry who designed for Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Rodman & Yaris Jewelry Findings. Gladys also sold jewelry privately. In the 1940's she traveled to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica on her own. She traveled extensively throughout the world to places including Russia and the Baltic area at the age of 90. Gladys was a courageous and resilient woman. A kind, caring, loving and devoted mother, her memory will be cherished forever. Along with her daughter, Dr. Judy Itzkowitz of South Windsor, CT, she leaves her cherished lifelong friend, Dr. Frances Bauer of New York, NY; her beloved dogs, Jesse and Jamie and many friends. She was predeceased by her sisters, Bunny Derner and Adele Feldman and her faithful Bichon companion, Sammy. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017, 10 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor, CT. Burial will follow at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, NY. Her family will observe Shiva at their home on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice and/or by performing an act of kindness in Gladys' memory.
