Jean Riss Monsees, 89, of Manchester, formerly of South Windsor died on Sunday November 20, 2016 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Daughter of Anona Sauveur Riss and Daniel Theodore Riss, pre-deceased by Thomas, her husband of more than 50 years, her sisters Elin Marie Smith and her husband Charles and Margaret Bloom and her husband Robert. Jean was born in Ralston, Pennsylvania. She graduated valedictorian from high school and then earned her teaching degree from West Chester State Teacher's College, located outside of Philadelphia. Although she did not pursue a long-term teaching career, teaching stayed with her throughout her life. Jean worked for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company for nearly forty years. She enjoyed her work but thoroughly cherished the longtime friendships developed over those years. Many summers were spent in Cape Cod, but Jean and Tom found time to take their four children and their family dog cross country several times, pitching tents, cooking on a camp stove, exploring national parks and taking in numerous park ranger shows. That was a great gift to their children. Jean loved spending time with people, reading books, solving Cryptograms and playing a good game of Scrabble. She was a kind and giving person and very dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer. As an active volunteer for the Friends of the South Windsor Library she co-chaired the Book Sale Committee. She served on the committee that worked on the library expansion in 1995. In addition, she was involved in the hospitality efforts for concerts and programs for Wood Memorial Library and South Windsor Cultural Arts committee. Jean delivered meals for over eleven years with the Meals on Wheels program. She also volunteered for FISH, an organization that provides rides for local residents. Jean shared her non-judgmental spirit for giving with her children and gently encouraged others around her to give of their time to a lonely person, a child, to visit a friend in the hospital or to support a community organization. Please find a moment to share your time, your skills and your passion with a stranger. Pay it forward and think fondly of Jean. Jean is survived by her son Peter William Monsees and daughter-in-law Roslyn of St. Inigoes, MD, grandson Daniel and his wife Katrina and great-granddaughter Guinevere of Burnham ME, and grandson David and his wife Crystal and great-grandsons Dalton, Aiden and Parker of St. Inigoes, MD, sons Andrew Riss Monsees of Ellington CT, and recently lost inspirational friend Eileen Keuhnel of South Windsor, CT and Thomas Daniel Monsees of Coventry, CT and his friend Barbara Murdock, daughter Lisa Sauveur McMahon and son-in-law Paul of Manchester, CT. She leaves many nieces and nephews and really wonderful friends. She greatly appreciated the friendship and care by aids and nurses from Interim Care, Salmon Brook Center and Crestfield Rehabilitation Center & Fenwood Manor. A funeral service will be held on Saturday December 3, 2016, 10:30 a.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 239 Graham Rd., South Windsor. Burial will be private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Wood Memorial Library PO Box 131 South Windsor, CT 06074. Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home has care of the arrangements.
