Mary Wallace Russell Dunning, of Granby, CT, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017, at the age of 83. The daughter of John Russell and Ruth Wallace Russell of Rochester, New York, Mary graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1954 and she moved to Granby as a young wife and mother in 1959; Granby has been her home ever since. She loved nature and reveled in gardening and watching the wild turkeys, bears and pileated woodpeckers in the woods around her house. She loved travel and went all over the world in her later years. She read voraciously, often dispatching two or three books a week. She was fiercely independent and creative, and was an especially gifted painter. She loved being alive until the day she died. Mary is survived by her brother John Russell; her four children, John Russell Dunning, David Stewart Dunning, Jeanne Dunning, and Elizabeth Ann Dunning Kaplan; and her two grandchildren, Natalie Ruth Kaplan and Abigail Marie Kaplan. She will be deeply missed. A memorial will be held at a later date. The Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home of Granby is in care of the arrangements.
